Administration Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
