Everyone is Welcome to Join as the Extra Haim Sisters Bandmate.
"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."
There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Several celebrated admirers have also begged for the position.
It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.
Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a close unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."
"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."
"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."
Historic Milestone
The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.
They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.
"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"
The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.
"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."
Emotional Upheaval and Candor
The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.
The words detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.
"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."
Evolution of Sound
That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.
"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."
Stories and Collective Laughter
The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.
Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."
An Assured Future
It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.
They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.
However the band will consistently be their number one priority.
"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
