Pentagon Report Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
