Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
