Watkins Maintains the Edge - However Calvert-Lewin Could Still Make the World Cup

Just one goal in his first ten top-flight outings this campaign had numerous questioning whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's best days were over.

Yet, a only four weeks later, he stands as the most discussed forward in England following netting seven goals in 6 straight games.

His most recent goal, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, took his total to eight, making him the leading English goalscorer in the Premier League this campaign.

A Stunning Resurgence

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, following a nine-year spell with Everton that was marred by injuries in its closing stages.

But, the statistics supporting his comeback in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 setup are extremely impressive.

His six-match scoring run puts him in prestigious company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more successive Premier League matches.

To frame that statistic, even England captain Harry Kane was unable to produce a run this long - his longest is two individual five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in recent memory is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

What's Behind the Hot Streak?

Why has Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in recent weeks? A recent opponent's manager described it aptly.

"He has the ideal timing," the manager said. "He's smart and a genuinely top-class striker and he found the timing to arrive just on time."

That nose for goal and timing inside the penalty area was what turned him into a popular figure at his former team.

Pundits highlight the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a major factor, helping more players to get into the box and occupy defenders, which has given the striker a little more space.

"He is a archetypal centre-forward," observed a former professional. "For the goal... it was a lovely little flick beyond the keeper, a classic centre-forward's goal."
